Domain Extensions Are Beating .Com at Revenue. Here's Why We're Still Getting It Wrong
2026-08-26 — marketing strategy SME India
I watched a client burn cash on a.com domain they didn't really need. The registration cost almost nothing. The strategy behind it cost them weeks of indecision.
The truth is simpler than most people admit:.com is dying. Not tomorrow. But the data from Wix shows it's no longer the only option worth considering.
Dot org websites are 34% more likely to generate revenue than.com, and pull in 3% more sessions. I know that sounds backwards. We've all been trained since the 1990s that.org means nonprofit, and therefore not a real business. But that's precisely what makes it work. There's less competition for.org domains in commercial space. Fewer people are trying to squeeze their brand into that extension. So when someone registers their shop on.org, it stands out. It doesn't whisper "trust me, I'm legit." It actually whispers something stranger: "I'm confident enough to not follow the herd."
The surprise comes next.
Between January and May 2026,.store,.online, and.shop domains doubled. All three signal ecommerce intent, which may be why they're gaining ground. Not just gaining ground. Actually, that's not quite right. They're gaining revenue. Ecommerce sites using.store domains earn 10% more revenue than.com sites. That's after you account for everything else: traffic quality, conversion rate, customer acquisition cost. Pure revenue lift from the domain extension itself.
Why?
Two reasons, as far as I can tell. First, if you're registering a.store domain, you've already decided you're serious about selling something. That decision gets baked into how you build the site, the copy you write, the trust signals you include. The domain pulls committed sellers. Second, the domain tells visitors what you are before they click anything. Friction disappears. They know they're shopping.
The.ai and.io surge is a different story. Dot ai registrations increased 20% from January to May 2026, becoming the 10th most popular domain extension in Wix's data. Registration of.io exploded even harder. That's not about consumer behavior. That's about builders and founders looking for identity in a crowded market. If you're building an AI tool or a tech product,.ai feels inevitable now. Maybe too inevitable.
Here's what actually matters to most of us running businesses.
If you're still on.com and it works, you don't need to panic. 82% of Wix sites in the United States use.com for their websites. That dominance is real. But when you're registering a new domain, when you're testing a new idea or a new product line, the calculus has changed. You don't have to choose.com. The data says you probably shouldn't. Pick the extension that tells your customer what you actually do. Let the domain do some of the work. Then watch what the data shows.
